The Grapevine High School girls soccer team won the UIL Class 5A State Championship on April 15, 2023, by a score of 1-0. The team has made six appearances in the state tournament over the last nine seasons, and this year came away with the gold. Baylor University signee and GHS senior Theresa McCullough scored the lone goal on a penalty kick awarded by a Frisco handball in the goalbox.
Head Coach Steve McBride said he still couldn’t believe it was real.
“The team was challenged from day one to be abnormal,” he shared. “Getting to state was not the mission but became the destination for this team.”
In addition to the state championship win, individuals on the history-making team received numerous accolades, including:
Conference 5A Girls Most Valuable Player
- Theresa McCullough, Forward
Conference 5A Girls All-Tournament Team
- Cecilia Cerone, Goalkeeper
- Samantha Lumpkin, Defender
- Theresa McCullough, Forward
- Rowan Truman, Midfielder
Congratulations to the 2023 State Champion Lady Mustangs!
